History

A.L. Mailman created Miramar as a “bedroom community” for neighboring Miami and Fort Lauderdale. In 1953, Mr. Mailman purchased the initial land from H.D. Perry, Sr. that he intended to develop. On the land, he constructed 56 low-cost concrete houses with flat roofs. Because the houses and land were so inexpensive, they sold fast, and the city of Miramar was established.

The city was named for the Cuban city outside of Havana where Mailman owned a summer residence and was formed on May 26, 1955. Less than two hundred inhabitants called the city home at the time of its formation. 

The initial boundaries of the city of Miramar were Southwest 64 Avenue on the east, University Drive on the west, the Dade County line on the south, and Pembroke Road on the north. The city had a land area of about 2.9 square miles. The first mayor and city council of the city were sworn in on June 20, 1955. 

They were entirely governor-appointed and kept office until January 1959, when the first municipal election was conducted. “Beauty and Progress” is the motto inscribed on the city seal.
